담양대건공동체(전라남도 담양은 대나무로 유명한 곳) 생활하고 있는 백성호 루카 수사입니다. 저의 사도직은 메니노인전문요양원에서 사회복지사로 어르신 프로그램을 진행하고 있습니다. 제가 있는 메니노인전문요양원은 치매, 뇌졸중 등의 중증 노인성 질환으로 전문적인 요양 및 보호가 필요 하신 분으로 63명의 어르신을 모시고 생활하고 있는 곳입니다. 어르신들과 함께 생활하다 보면 즐겁고, 재미난 일도 있지만, 때로는 힘들고, 안타까운 일도 발생합니다. 집에 가고 싶다고 문 열어 주라고 하는 어르신, 누가 본인 물건 가져간다고 방에도 못 들어가게 하신 어르 신, 자녀 이름만 부르는 어르신, 식사를 잘 하지 많은 어르신, 목욕을 하지 않는 어르신 등 여러 어르신들과 생활하다 보니 하루에도 몇 번 씩 웃고, 가슴아파하고 있습니다. 예전에 요양원으로 공연을 하러 오신 자원봉사자들이 있었습니다. 한창 민요도 부르고 춤도 멋지게 추고 계시는데 어르신 한 분이 “하지마, 하지마” 라고 한소리 하셨습니다. 공연 중에 그런 소리를 들으신 자원봉사자가 당황하는 모습이 기억납니다. 저희는 어르신의 치매증상이라고 정중히 사과말씀을 드린 적도 있습니다. 한 번은 야간에 어르신 한 분이 안 보인다고 요양원 전체가 발칵 뒤지어졌습니다. 걱정하는 마음으로 모든 선생님이 요양원 내부 및 외부를 샅샅이 찾아 다녔지만 어디에도 보이지 않으셨 습니다. 어르신을 찾아 1시간 정도 해매고 있었는데, 요양원 내부에서 어르신을 찾아다는 연락을 받았습니다. 어르신이 다른 방에 있는 옷장 한 구석에 앉아계셨던 경우도 있었습니다.
제일 먼저 하느님께 감사기도를 드렸습니다. 사실 이 때 다른 요양원에서 어르신이 밖으로 나가 돌아가셨 다는 소식을 들을 무렵이어서 더 긴장되고 걱정을 하게 되었습니다. 이처럼 하루하루가 어르신들과 동고동락하는 삶이 진정 하느님의 부르심 “성소”라고 생각합니다.
I live in St. Daegun Community, Damyang, where I am involved with the Home for the Elderly. This is located in a very beautiful region of Korea which is famous for its scenery and bamboo forests. I provide programs for the elderly in the Home as a social worker. Most of the elderly in the Home are suffering from geriatric illnesses such as dementia, or are post-stroke clients. Working with the elderly can be very pleasant but sometimes it can be difficult. For example, one client would constantly ask for the door to be opened to let him go home; another client would not allow anyone to enter her room because she was suspicious; another client was always calling out loud her children’s names. As a Brother working in the home I have had many experiences - both good and bad. I often have to prepare visitors who are visiting the home, and explain to them about the daily routine of the clients. I am fully aware that as a Brother of St John of God I have obligations to the elderly in my care; to ensure their comfort and safety, and also make sure that their final days are relaxed, by creating for them an environment in which they feel secure. I am really enjoying this life with its many unpredictable but rewarding moments, its continuing ups and downs. I feel called by God to live with the elderly and to share in the last days of their lives.
