저는 한국 관구에서도 담양에 있는 메니노인전문요양원에서 근무하는 박자경 간호사입니다. 2007년 12월 개원하여 몇 개월 지나지 않아 저희는 91세된 할아버지 한분을 모시게 되었습니다. 전직 군인이셨던 그분은 입소당시 전혀 움직이려 하지 않으시고 눈을 감은체 식사, 약, 간식 등 모든 것을 거부하셨습니다. 양치질을 하기만 해도 칫솔을 뺏어 던지거나 본인을 방어하듯 때리려는 모습뿐이었습니다. 치매가 있으셨고, 청력도 좋지 않았기 때문에 의사소통에도 어려움이 있었습니다. 입소전 요양병원에 계셨던 그 어르신의 가족들은 ‘그곳에서 우리 아버지에게 어떤 일이 있었는지 모르겠지만 이렇게 변했 다’고 하셨습니다. 당시 근무했던 저희 선생님들과 수사님은 아무리 공격적인 모습으로 거절을 하셔도 일관성 있는 모습으로 대했으며 꾸준한 관심을 보였습니다. 그리고 점차 변화된 모습을 보이셨습니다. 자발적인 식사를 하셨고, 주변에 관심을 보이고, 책을 보시기도 하셨습니다. 전직 군인이셨던 그 어르신을 위해 수사님이 인 터넷을 통해 군인영화를 보여드리자 매우 흡족한 표정을 지으셨습니다. 점점 활기를 되찾으셨고, 처음 오실 때 거동조차 못 하셨던 분이 워커를 이용하여 보행을 하시기 시작하자 가족들은 매우 놀라워했습니다. 그렇게 5년 조금 넘게 저희와 함께 하 시다 임종을 하셨습니다. 저는 생각합니다. 특히 어르신들을 모시면서 호스피탤러티란 우리를 찾는 모든 대상자에게 존중하 고 사랑하는 마음으로 그분들이 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 알아 조금이라도 편하게 지내실 수 있도록 모든 최선을 다하는 것이 지 않을까..?
I am a head nurse working at The Order’s Aged Care Home in Damyang. It is a service offered by the Hospitaller Order of St. John. It opened in December of 2007 and our first client was a 91 year old man. He was a er soldier. When admitted he would not move and rejected meals, medicine and everything with his eyes closed. When helped to brush his teeth he grabbed the toothbrush to throw it away and violently threatened the care giver. We had difficulty in communicating with him due to his weak hearing and developing dementia. As time went on he gradually began to improve – thanks to the constant and unchanging attitudes and care of personnel and Brothers. His family members expressed their surprise at his improved behavior. He started to eat meals voluntarily, to show interest in his surroundings and other people and sometimes read books. When a Brother helped him to watch movies on soldiers over the internet, he smiled contentedly. He gradually started to walk with the help of a walking device, which amazed his relatives. When he died he had spent five years with us in the Nursing Home. I sometimes think: “What is hospitality?” Is it not always do our best for the clients in our care and treat them in a very respectful manner as if they were a member of our own family? his is what hospitality means to me as a member of the Family of St John of God.
